Palm Stick (wrench, pen, flashlight)Blade (knife, broken bottle, scissors)
Projectile (gun , pepper spray , rocks)
Linked ( chain, pet leash
Empty Hands ( unarmed applications of kali)
Notice in the classifications above that many everyday items fit into each category. Learning how to use a
stick translates very well to great variety of items.
Sticks are an extension of the hands; without the hands, there can be no sticks. This is worth knowing
because people still like to ask, sometimes sarcastically, Why do you practice stick fighting -it's not like
you carry sticks everywhere you go? It's good to be able to answer them, Although practitioners of many styles
do lip service to this statement, only practitioners of the FMA back it up by doing the same extact techniques with
and without weapons. The FMA (kali, escrima ,arnis) teach weapons first, after which come empty hand techniques.
The Filipino martial arts represent the most well-rounded and practical fighting technques in the world.
HOW SO?
They're well-rounded in that cover all distances in which combat takes place: long range kicking, middle range boxing, elbowing, kneeing and short range grabbing, poking, biting, grappling.
THE FMA ARE THE ONLY ONES THAT CAN COMPLEMENT ANY OTHER FIGHTING STYLE.
They don't conflict with other styles; they actually strengthen them.

Kali is a serious art for self-defense. It requires no skills to learn and it was created to teach you how to defend yourself in minimum amount of time.
Real self defense may not be what you think it is. It's not what's taught in most martial art schools, or what you see in the movies. Real, comprehensive self defense skills require an understanding of violence, awareness, and prevention, effective techniques, a variety of training methods, and a solid strategy for both unarmed and armed attacks. The majority of martial arts and self defense courses focus on only one or two of those areas, often unrealistically.
